The Zen Art Of SharePoint 2003 to MOSS 2007 upgrades

The following blog gives a set of steps to allow the smooth migration or upgrade of a SharePoint 2003 portal site to MOSS 2007. (Note only portal aspects covered)

 

1. Analysis and Identification

  • Carryout a full assessment of existing portal to include:
    • Sites
    • Usage
    • Standard Web Part usage
    • Custom Site Definitions & Templates
    • Screen layouts and UI customisation
    • Databases
    • Infrastructure
  • Evaluate New requirements
    • Out of the box Web Parts provided by MOSS 2007
    • Extension of existing  web parts
    • UI requirements
    • Branding changes
  • Define UI
    • Define new CSS
    • Define Master Page(s) for Applications, Sites and Content Pages
  • Backup old Portal
  • Create Local (Dev) Platform (use virtual server)
    • Restore Old Portal Here
    • Deploy Custom Web parts and other pre-developed pieces
    • Run prescan.exe with information of Custom site definitions and resolve any errors 
    • Install MOSS 2007 as 'Gradual Upgrade'
    • Run MOSS 2007 Configuration Wizard to install MOSS 2007 side by side
  • Development of Custom Site Definition/Templates

    • Matching Existing Site Definitions/Templates with MOSS Server 2007 Site Templates
    • Develop Site Definition in MOSS 2007 Technology
    • Test Site Definition in new Environment
    • Develop any definition upgrades required and deploy
  • Test & Fix
  • Deploy to Live
  • Remove Portal 2003 and associated databases, definitions ect
  • Complete MOSS 2007 setups including Search
